Evidence-Based Sustainability: How International Standards Are Transforming the Energy Value Chain
Oct 20, 2025
- PEP Ecopassport evaluates the entire product lifecycle, offering verifiable metrics on emissions, water and energy consumption, and resource use.
- The Low Carbon initiative leverages over 15 years of continuous improvement to reduce emissions, optimize processes, and prioritize recycled materials.
- These tools enhance transparency, traceability, and sustainable decision-making in the energy industry.
Colombia, October 2025 – In a global landscape where sustainability is solidifying its position as a top priority, companies face the challenge of communicating their environmental commitment truthfully and coherently. A study by McKinsey & Company reveals that since the pandemic, consumers have shown a greater interest in companies that offer environmentally responsible products and adopt sustainable practices, rewarding those that operate with transparency and build trust through environmentally conscious decisions.
The energy sector is no exception to this trend and is advancing its corporate responsibility. In Colombia, Centelsa by Nexans, a subsidiary of the Nexans Group, is driving this change through initiatives that measure, report, and improve the environmental performance of its products based on verifiable indicators and internationally recognized standards.
“At Centelsa by Nexans, we believe that sustainability isn't built on talk, but on data and actions that prevent greenwashing and promote conscious decisions. Our goal is to provide clear, traceable information backed by international certifications,” stated Martha Sepúlveda of Centelsa by Nexans.
In line with this commitment, the company has integrated two key pillars: its Low Carbon initiative, which includes the PEP Ecopassport certification, establishing a solid framework for responsible environmental communication about its manufactured electrical products. This is complemented by sustainable practices that include recycling metals like copper and aluminum, recycling plastics, and recovering reels used for transporting and winding cables.
Low Carbon: Over 15 Years of Continuous Improvement
Backed by over a decade and a half of process optimization, the Low Carbon offering prioritizes energy efficiency, the use of recycled materials, and emissions reduction. The program provides clients and partners with concrete data on the impact of each kilometer of cable manufactured, offering objective criteria for decision-making and project development.
With these tools, Centelsa by Nexans is driving a more sustainable electrification, characterized by responsible resource management and collaborative work with clients, suppliers, and communities.
PEP Ecopassport: An International Standard for Transparency
The PEP Ecopassport certification evaluates a product's environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle—from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal—measuring indicators such as CO₂ emissions, water and energy consumption, and mineral resource extraction.
Although there are no regulations in Colombia requiring companies to have this type of declaration, Nexans voluntarily adopts the PEP Ecopassport, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability. This information is particularly relevant for companies seeking or maintaining certifications such as Sustainable Construction, Carbon Neutral, or Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).
